The Well Society – the fan-led majority shareholder of Motherwell Football Club – has today announced it has smashed its ambitious £1 million fundraising campaign, reinforcing the club’s position as a pioneer of fan-owned football.
The milestone ensures a vital contingency fund for the UK’s first top-flight fan-owned football club and further strengthens its long-term sustainability model. The achievement comes as Motherwell celebrates securing its 41st consecutive year in the top tier of Scottish football.
Launched in March, the ‘Make a Million by May’ campaign set out to build financial resilience and give fans a direct stake in shaping the future of their club. Since then, supporters have signed up, increased contributions, and backed innovative fundraising initiatives.
On top of the seven-figure reserve fund, more than £1.1m has already gone into the club in the form of loans, share purchases and donations.
Well Society Chair, Philip Speedie, welcomed the milestone:
“This is a landmark moment for our members, for fan-ownership and for Scottish football. Our supporters have once again demonstrated their incredible commitment to our club and community. Together, we’ve not only built a £1 million contingency fund, but strengthened a model that puts fans at the heart of everything we do.”
Motherwell FC Chair, Kyrk Macmillan, added:
“The role of the Well Society in securing and sustaining Motherwell’s future cannot be overstated. The executive board is extremely happy to be working hand-in-hand with the society and we are grateful for the hard work which has delivered this result.
“We are proud to be a fan owned club and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed and helping the society reach this milestone.”
