Jens Berthel Askou told Well Society members that Motherwell would reap the benefits of ongoing modernisation projects for years to come.

Speaking in Thursday’s Meet the Manager event, the Motherwell manager revealed that his first impressions, of a club that was pushing for positive change, had been reinforced since taking charge. The Dane has made a major difference to Motherwell’s playing style and remains unbeaten ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Dundee in the league. But he also feels there are major changes happening off the park too.

“The first thing I felt straight away was that it was a place where people look after each other and where people are very committed to each other and to doing something together,” he said. “You could feel there was a group of people in charge that wanted to lift the club and were open to new ideas and to modernise the club. I’ve only had that impression enhanced over the last couple of months, that everything is being pushed in the right direction.

“A lot of things are going on that we can’t really present yet, but it will come over time and that you don’t see and don’t know about, but we are really trying to improve and to develop as a football club in many ways.

“We will reap the benefit of that over time and also past probably the time that I will be here, because we are trying to build a football club that’s sustainable and that will be successful for many, many years to come for you and the generation of fans that has always been here and the next generation of fans that we are trying to get interested and involved in Motherwell.”

The Well boss was joined by assistant Max Rogers and chairman Kyrk Macmillan as fans got the chance to ask questions in an event put on exclusively for Well Society members. The evening, in a packed Centenary Suite at Fir Park, was expertly hosted by Graeme Thewliss and was recorded for a special edition of Our Club, Our Podcast.

Jens outlined his ambitions for the team, talked about his coaching journey and approach to management in a wide-ranging discussion, while Max explained how he fits in to the new-look backroom team.

Kyrk spoke of recent upgrades to Fir Park, including the introduction of digital advertising boards and construction of Mrs Baillie’s Bar, and predicted that “bigger projects still to come” would make a “significant difference”.

You can listen to the full discussion when Episode 3 of Our Club, Our Podcast is released around the middle of next week.
