The latest stage in the transformation of the new-look fan zone has been completed – and more work is already under way.

Artificial grass has been installed in the area next to Mrs Baillie’s Bar. The next phase of the project will see a shelter constructed outside the new bar to allow for all-weather use.

The Well Society has utilised income from events and fundraising activities to help finance a transformation of the beer garden area – which is situated in the corner between the Phil O’Donnell and Tommy McLean stands. The scheme was selected in a bid to boost income for the club and enhance the match day experience for all Motherwell fans.

Formerly a hard five-a-side surface, the area had been used as a beer garden with a mobile bar in recent seasons.

A permanent wooden construction was added over the summer and named Mrs Baillie’s Bar in homage to the location of the meeting which led to the establishment of Motherwell Football Club in 1886. The bar area has been fitted out with historical photos and information in partnership with the MFC Heritage Trust.

Picnic benches were constructed by Lanark Men’s Shed, a branch of an organisation which was set up to combat social isolation in older men, and allow them to learn and utilise new skills.

The overall project has involved club staff, volunteers, Well Society board members and other partners.

Although not open for tonight’s visit of Dundee United amid work to install the shelter, the fan zone will be a regular pre-match feature at Fir Park in the years ahead.

Further Well Society events income will be utilised to provide lasting benefits to the club and fans in the coming months and years.
