Zac's Bench

Zac’s bench : Forever claret and amber

The family of young Zac Gunn have paid tribute to the Motherwell FC fan who died earlier this year, by installing a beautiful bench in the Memorial Garden at his beloved Fir Park.

The seven-year-old was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2019, a rare condition impacting the heart and lungs, and died surrounded by his family in June this year. The young Junior Steel member was a regular in the Cooper Stand, where he’d cheer on his heroes in claret and amber.

The bench, which bears the plaque in his name and the words ‘Forever Claret and Amber’, sits in the recently-refurbished garden, which holds the ashes of many Motherwell fans.

Dad Gordon, mum Ashley, brother Jacob and other members of the family visited late last month. In a short service club chaplain Arlene Dale said: “The garden is a place where people come, maybe as individuals or families to honour those no longer with us. A peaceful place.  A quiet corner of Fir Park where memories are held in the air, where Zac will be remembered by those who come to visit the garden and choose to sit on his bench.

“You have a community and a club that embraces you. So, sit quietly or speak loudly, share memories with others who come to visit.  Zac’s bench will welcome stories, tears and smiles for all who knew him and all who will hear his story.”

Gordon said: “The family can’t thank The Well Society enough for organising all of this, it was very special. Arlene was amazing and it was just so lovely.”
