‘The Changing Room’: Investing in Men’s Mental Health
The Changing Room has one goal – to promote men’s mental health and wellbeing through the power of the beautiful game.
It’s easy to talk about football – whether it’s pre-match tactics, the team selection, or post-match analysis with your mates. But men also need to get the stuff that’s really bothering them off their chests. The Changing Room is here for you.
The Well Society and Motherwell FC Community Trust have partnered with Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) to help deliver a new project to aid young men with their mental wellbeing.
The Changing Room is a free project aimed at men aged 16-30 and will be based at Fir Park. It is a chance to chew the fat about football, life and wellbeing in familiar surroundings.
The 12-week programme begins at 7.15pm on Thursday, November 7 in the Davie Cooper Stand.
Over the course of the 12 weeks, participants can expect to learn more about their mental health and wellbeing; connect with others with shared experiences; as well as having a good time and meaningful chats.
Gary, a previous Changing Room participant, said: “When I came home after the first group I felt different. I think maybe just because you could see other people were struggling as well. It was a wee group of people all there for one another, whether it’s on the other end of the phone or a WhatsApp message or whatever. There’s always somebody there if you need anything.”
Well Society director Derek Watson added: “Like the football we watch, we all have ups and downs. Periods where things are going great, and periods when we’re tested.
“When our line up on the field is tested, we’re there for them. That’s true also for each of us off the field. At Motherwell we’re a family, a community and The Changing Room is a great football themed resource for anyone keen to work on their wellbeing.”
